Eaton Canyon Commission
I just finished! I will post better pictures soon of the piece framed in it’s lovely, oak floater frame. The client saw a piece I had done that was like the look and feel that she wanted. She wanted an abstract, organic, collaged piece that had a lot of movement but was soothing at the same time. The piece she referenced of mine had been done based on nature studies done in Prescott AZ. Since the client and I both lived in SoCal I decided to do a piece based off nature studies in Eaton Canyon, CA. The client wanted a piece that was both visually stunning and evocative of the natural world. I was excited to take on this challenge, as I have always been fascinated by the beauty and diversity of nature.
The Inspiration
I spent several days hiking in Eaton Canyon, taking in the sights and sounds of the natural world. I was particularly drawn to the rocks in the riverbed and the shapes formed by the differing values of elements. I made several sketches in graphite and took a lot of pictures. I knew the terrain well as I have spent many hours plein air painting the landscape.
The Process
Back in my studio, I printed out my selected photos in black and white. I cranked up the contrast so that I could focus on the lines and masses. Along with my photos and nature sketches I composed compositions until I was happy with what I had. Now came the laborious part of cutting out all the canvas layers and gluing them into place.
The Final Product
The final product is a large-scale mixed media piece that is both visually stunning and evocative of the natural world. It is made up of a variety of organic shapes and textures, and is painted in a palette of soothing colors. The piece is also infused with a sense of movement and energy, which is reminiscent of the natural world.
I am very pleased with the final product, and love how the shifting light, throughout the day, changes the composition as it reflects or cast shadows on the layered canvas. I am also grateful to the client for giving me the opportunity to create this piece.
…A Sad Ending
Jan 7th 2025, the Eaton fire raged through my neighborhood and burnt down my house and studio. This painting amongst many more burned in the fire.
Here is the before, during and after of my studio. RIP
